S-Adenosyl Methionine (SAM-e) SAM-e is one of the beneficial products of methylation. It is a metabolite of Methionine, and has a tendency to decrease with age. Methyl groups are compounds you need to replenish as we age. They promote methylation, a process whereby homocysteine (a potentially dangerous amino acid) is converted into methionine, a beneficial compound. SAM-e is also essential for the synthesis of melatonin, an anti-aging hormone that regulates the sleep-wake cycles. It also helps to protect DNA from mutations that could promote cancer.
SAM-e prevents peripheral nerve damage due to lack of oxygen and is usually deficient in diseases where peripheral neuropathy is part of the clinical picture.
SAM-e is also a highly effective natural antidepressant that works as well as current prescription drugs without any of the unpleasant and potentially dangerous side effects (American Journal of Psychiatry).
SAM-e is also gaining recognition as an excellent support for the inflammatory condition called osteoarthritis, and is as effective as Ibuprophen in controlling this inflammation.
