Coenzyme Q 10 is not a vitamin, nor is it a hormone. It is an accessory nutrient; a vital
accessory nutrient. CoQ 10, as it is
called, comes in two forms as supplements, Ubiquinone and Ubiquinol. Ubiquinol is the active form and Ubiquinone
gets converted to Ubiquinol bio-chemically, in the body, a reaction requiring
the expenditure of energy. This is an
important point in individuals who should be conserving as much energy as
possible, (i.e.; cardiac patients, cancer patients) and so Ubiquinol would be the preferred form for supplementation.
Inside the cells of the body are structures called
mitochondria. These are the
“power-houses” of the cells because they are the sites where the energy is
manufactured. At the end of glycolysis
is the Krebb’s Cycle which is the “furnace” where the fuel is burned releasing
electrons for the production of ATP through the electron transport chain. This process cannot be accomplished without
CoQ 10. Although the body is able to
synthesize CoQ 10, deficiency states can exist and since the heart is one of
the most metabolically active tissues in the body, a deficiency of CoQ 10 can
result in cardiac dysfunction and heart failure. Deficiency states can be the result of
impaired synthesis of CoQ 10 due to nutritional deficiencies or medications,
genetic or acquired defects in the synthesis of CoQ 10 or increased tissue
requirements. Problems such as angina,
hypertension, mitral valve prolapse and congestive heart failure are examples
of increased tissue requirements. In
addition, patients with these problems are usually on medications which could negatively
affect the production of CoQ 10 in the body.
As you can see, it is very complex.
The benefits of CoQ 10 lie squarely in its ability to
improve the production of energy within the body, along with its potent
antioxidant activity. It is easily seen
that the benefits of CoQ 10 are in the prevention and support of cardiovascular
diseases and cancer. The antioxidant
activity of CoQ 10 is in its ability to protect against lipid
peroxidation. CoQ 10 exerts a sparing
effect on Vitamin E and then along with
Vitamin E, prevents damage to lipid membranes and plasma
lipids. Supplementation with CoQ 10,
much like other antioxidants, offers powerful protection against
atherosclerosis by preventing the formation of lipid peroxide and the oxidation
of LDL cholesterol.
CoQ 10 can be used beneficially for the following problems
diseases such as congestive heart failure, hypertension, cardiomyopathy, mitral
valve prolapse, coronary artery bypass surgery and angina.
(with or without chemotherapy)
Vista Natural Wellness Ubiquinol is pharmaceutical grade and produced through a patented process that stabilizes this form of CoQ 10 against oxidation.
